Koufonissi Island

Koufonissi lies to the east of Ierapetra, further from the mainland coast than Chrissi and visited by far fewer people. The island is uninhabited and largely unknown outside Greece, which is precisely what makes it special.

The landscape of Koufonissi is wilder and more stark than Chrissi — pale rock, sparse vegetation, and long stretches of pale sand giving way to water that shifts from pale turquoise in the shallows to deep indigo in the channels between. Ancient ruins scattered across the plateau recall a time when this island was a busy port on Mediterranean trade routes.
